Olive Crochet Pattern

Say “Olive You” with this sweet free valentine crochet pattern!

Imagine my surprise when this sweet little Olive sprang to life out of my martini to say “olive you!” This is a super quick pattern that you can complete in less than an hour, making it perfect for Valentine gifting! And make one without the heart to keep you company year round! I made mine into a crochet olive purse charm by adding a keychain to the top.

MATERIALS (what I recommend in parentheses)

Yarn: Lightweight yarn (light-worsted, DK, or 4-ply) (Rico Creative Ricorumi DK)
- Body – Ricorumi DK in Pea Green
- Pimento – Ricorumi DK in Red
- Heart – Ricorumi DK in Pink
Hook: 2.5mm hook (Clover Amou r)
Toy stuffing (Fairfield Poly-Fil)
Stitch markers (Clover Quick Locking Stitch Markers Medium – I LOVE these, they don’t leave big holes in your work!)
Eyes: 6mm beads or safety eyes (my favorite eye beads and my favorite safety eyes !)
Black embroidery floss for mouth
Black sewing thread if using beads for eyes
Embroidery or sewing needle (DMC Embroidery Needles)
Tapestry needle (DMC Tapestry Needle Size 16)
Scissors (Gingher Stork Scissors)
Optional: pink blush and brush or cotton bud for cheeks
Optional: sewing pins to help plot Olive’s face

FINISHED SIZE

The finished height of the olive amigurumi is 3.5 inches when using a 2.5 mm hook and Ricorumi Cotton DK yarn. You can use other hook and yarn combinations to make your crochet olive bigger or smaller (even super chunky chenille yarn!). Just make sure your stitches are tight to avoid stuffing showing through. _x – the number of times to repeat the steps in brackets
YO – yarn over
[ ] – Repeat steps between brackets for the specified number of times
( ) – The number of stitches you should have at the end of each round

NOTES

Body, Pimento, and Heart are made in continuous rounds. Legs and Arms are made in rows.
Mark the beginning of each round with a stitch marker.
When increasing, I staggered the increases (if you read rnd 4 of the body, you will see that instead of saying [sc 2, inc 1] 6x, I have written [sc 1, inc 1, sc 1] 6x. There are still 2 scs between each inc, but staggering the increases makes your olive have a better, rounder shape. When the increases are stacked on top of each other, it results in a boxier shape.
All stitches are written in US terminology.
Demonstration photos are shown using right-handed crochet.

OLIVE CROCHET PATTERN

OLIVE BODY

rnd 1: With green yarn, sc 6 into a magic ring (6 sts)
rnd 2: inc 6x (12 sts)
rnd 3: [sc 1, inc 1] 6x (18 sts)
rnd 4: [sc 1, inc 1, sc 1] 6x (24 sts)
rnd 5: [sc 3, inc 1] 6x (30 sts)
rnds 6-16: sc around (30 sts for 11 rnds)
rnd 17: [sc 3, inv dec 1] 6x (24 sts)
• • • If using safety eyes, insert them now between rnds 8 and 9 about 7 sts apart. If using beads, you’ll make the face after finishing Olive’s body.
Stuff Olive and keep stuffing until the end. If you want to give your crochet olive a booty, pause here and complete steps 1 and 2 of the MAKING THE BUTT photo tutorial below. • • •
rnd 18: [sc 2, inv dec 1] 6 times (18 sts)
rnd 19: [sc 1, inv dec 1] 6 times (12 sts)
rnd 20: Inv dec 6 (6 sts)
Sl st 1 into next st. Fasten off and cut yarn, leaving a 12-inch yarn tail. If you’re making the butt, don’t weave in end. See photo tutorial below for finishing.

MAKING THE BUTT

Olive’s tiny booty is easily formed using the yarn tail and 2 small balls of toy stuffing. The photo tutorial below will show you how to do it!

Step 1: Forming two small stuffing balls half inch in diameter to create cheeks after completing round 16 of olive amigurumi — step 1: after completing rnd 16 of olive, form 2 small balls of stuffing about half an inch in diameter for the cheeks. Press your finger from the inside to stretch out a pocket for each cheek.

Step 2: Inserting stuffing balls into olive amigurumi where crochet was stretched out for each cheek - olive crochet pattern — step 2: insert stuffing balls into your olive where you stretched out your crochet for each cheek. Complete olive and finish stuffing before moving to next step.

Step 3: Finishing the olive amigurumi piece by sewing the last round closed - Valentine olive crochet pattern assembly — step 3: finish off the piece by sewing the last rnd closed.

Step 4: Inserting threaded tapestry needle through center of ending hole to begin defining the butt - olive crochet pattern — step 4: Insert threaded tapestry needle through center of ending hole and bring out between sts under rnd 12, between stuffing balls.

Step 5: Making a long yarn tail line to form butt crack by inserting needle between stitches - olive amigurumi tutorial — step 5: Make a long line with yarn tail to make butt crack, inserting your needle between sts under rnd 18.

Step 6: Bringing tapestry needle back through the olive amigurumi and out through the same hole under round 12 — step 6: bring your tapestry needle back through your olive and out of the same hole under rnd 12.

Step 7: Pulling yarn tightly to define the butt on the olive amigurumi - pressing nail into center to define the shape — step 7: pull the yarn tightly to define the butt. Press your nail into the center thread to define the butt more.

Step 8: Repeating step 5 through another part of the olive to weave in yarn and finish the butt definition - olive crochet — step 8: repeat step 5, but bring the tapestry needle out through another part of the olive. Weave the yarn tail through several stitches on 2 rnds of the olive to make it extra secure. Then bring yarn tail through olive again and cut yarn tail close to body.

MAKING THE FACE

A tip for managing your threads while making the face, I recommend knotting your threads on top of the olive’s body where the red pimento will cover any knots you made.

Gather your 6 mm eye beads, black sewing thread, black embroidery floss, and sewing or embroidery needle. Using sewing thread and needle, sew your eye beads between rounds 8 and 9 of body, 7 stitches apart. If you made a butt, make sure the face is centered on the front of the olive, in line with the booty crack. For the mouth, use 6 strands of embroidery floss and needle to embroider a smile on rnd 9 about 3 sts wide. Leave a little slack for the mouth so they can smile! You can also use a dot of fabric glue to make the smile permanent.

Make sure to secure all of your knots and threads on the top of the olive! I recommend adding blush at the very end of your project so it doesn’t smear. For the blush, just tap your small brush or cotton bud into the blush and stamp it onto the olive.

PIMENTO

rnd 1: With red yarn, sc 6 into a magic ring (6 sts)
rnd 2: inc 6 (12 sts)
rnd 3: [sc 1, inc 1] 6x (18 sts)
Sl st 1 into next st. Fasten off and cut yarn, leaving a 12-inch yarn tail for attaching. Using tapestry needle, sew to top of Olive over rnds 1-3.

LIMBS – TWO OPTIONS

I’ve provided 2 options for the limbs depending on the look you like and what technique you’d like to use! The first option is to make the limbs with i-cords. Crocheting i-cords will give you more rounded looking arms and legs, but i-cords can be very fiddly to make. Click here to watch the video tutorial of the i-cord limbs.

For an easier option, you can do the chain option – just making a chain and crochet single crochets into the chains. Pick your option and let’s make these limbs!

I-CORD OPTION – LEG (MAKE 2)

row 1: ch 3, [insert hook into next ch, YO and pull up a loop] 2x (3 loops on hook)
rows 2-8: Slip 2 loops off hook, pinching them with your yarn holding hand to make sure you don’t lose them. YO, draw through the loop on your hook. Pick up next loose loop, YO, draw through 1 loop. Pick up last loose loop, YO, draw through 1 loop (3 loops on hook)

YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook. Leave an 8-inch yarn tail for attaching.

I-CORD OPTION – ARM (MAKE 2)

row 1: ch 3, [insert hook into next ch, YO and pull up a loop] 2x (3 loops on hook)
rows 2-7: Slip 2 loops off hook, pinching them with your yarn holding hand to make sure you don’t lose them. YO, draw through the loop on your hook. Pick up next loose loop, YO, draw through 1 loop. Pick up last loose loop, YO, draw through 1 loop (3 loops on hook)

row 1: ch 9, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 8 in the back bump of the ch sts (8 sts)
Fasten off and leave an 8-inch yarn tail for attaching. Using tapestry needle, attach to Olive’s body in the stitches marked in the photo below.

CHAIN OPTION – ARM (MAKE 2)

row 1: ch 8, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 7 in the back bump of the ch sts (7 sts)
Fasten off and leave an 8-inch yarn tail for attaching. Using tapestry needle, attach to Olive’s body in the stitches marked in the photo below.

HEART

rnd 1: Make a magic ring, make the following sts into the center of the magic ring:
hdc 2, sc 2, hdc 1, sc 2, hdc 2, ch 1, sl st 1. Pull the magic ring closed.
Fasten off, leaving a tail for attaching. Attach between arms and weave in all loose ends.
