These crochet snails are ready to party!

Little known fact – crochet snails are total party animals. Have you ever wondered why snails only come out at night? It’s because they are out there raging! Then they have to sleep all day because they were out partying all night. The inside of a crochet snail’s shell is filled with disco balls, confetti, and cake!
Now you can make your very own Party Snail amigurumi with this free crochet snail pattern – scroll down to see the pattern!

FINISHED SIZE OF CROCHET SNAIL

CROCHET STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMINOLOGY)
I have provided a few links below for tutorials I made on how I do the specified stitch!
rnd(s) – Round(s)
ch – Chain
st(s) – Stitch(es)
sl st – Slip stitch
sc – Single crochet
inc – Single crochet increase (also sometimes called sc 2 in 1 st)
inv dec – Single crochet invisible decrease
FLO – front loop only
[ ] – Repeat the steps between brackets for the specified number of times
( ) – The number of stitches you should have at the end of each round
Finish off – Knot your yarn close to the piece and weave through the sts in the last round
NOTES
- The shell, body, and hat are all worked in a continuous round (like a spiral). Mark the first stitch of each round with a stitch marker.
- For your body color, use a light color so the face shows!
- Demonstration photos are shown using right-handed crochet.
- You can embroider the face either after rnd 6 of the body or after you finish and connect the shell and body.
- You can use lightweight yarn and a size C (2.75mm) hook for a slightly smaller snail.
- If you don’t want to embroider the eyes, I recommend using round black beads instead of safety eyes. The snail’s head is too small to fit the safety eye post.

PARTY SNAIL CROCHET PATTERN

SNAIL SHELL
rnd 1: Start with a magic ring, sc 7 into ring (7 sts)
rnd 2: inc 7 (14 sts)
rnd 3: [sc 1, inc 1] 7 times (21 sts)
rnd 4: [sc 1, inc 1, sc 1] 7 times (28 sts)
rnd 5: [sc 3, inc 1] 7 times (35 sts)
rnd 6: [sc 2, inc 1, sc 2] 7 times (42 sts)
rnds 7-10: Sc around (42 sts for 4 rnds)
• • • Weave in your beginning yarn tail before continuing. • • •Â
rnd 11: [sc 4, inv dec 1] 7 times (35 sts)
rnd 12: [sc 3, inv dec 1] 7 times (28 sts)
rnd 13: [sc 2, inv dec 1] 7 times (21 sts)
• • • Stuff the shell now and continue stuffing until closed. • • •
rnd 14: [sc 1, inv dec 1] 7 times (14 sts)
rnd 15: inv dec 7 times, sl st 1 into first st of previous round (7 sts)
Finish off, leaving an 8-inch tail for weaving in.
BODY
rnd 1: Start with a magic ring, sc 7 (7 sts)
rnd 2: inc 7 (14 sts)
rnds 3-5: Sc around (14 sts for 3 rnds)
rnd 6: [sc 5, inv dec 1] 2 times (12 sts)
rnds 7-16: Sc around (12 sts for 10 rnds)
• • • Stuff your snail’s body when you reach rnd 16. The body should only be stuffed from rnds 1-16. Don’t stuff the section of body that will be under the shell. This will help your crochet snail stand up on its own. • • •
rnds 17-24: Sc around (12 sts for 8 rnds)
rnd 25: [sc 4, inv dec 1] 2 times (10 sts)
rnd 26: Sc around (10 sts)
rnd 27: [sc 3, inv dec 1] 2 times (8 sts)
rnd 28: Sc around (8 sts)
rnd 29: [sc 2, inv dec 1] 2 times, sl st 1 into first st of last round (6 sts)
Finish off, but DON’T WEAVE IN THE END and leave a long tail (about 24 inches) for attaching the body to the shell.
HAT
rnd 1: Start with a magic ring, sc 5 (5 sts)
• • • Leave the beginning yarn tail outside of the hat and don’t weave in this end. We will use it to attach the pompom. • • •Â
rnd 2: [sc 1, inc 1] 2 times, sc 1 (7 sts)
rnd 3: [sc 2, inc 1] 2 times, sc 1 (9 sts)
rnd 4: [sc 3, inc 1] 2 times, sc 1, sl st 1 into first st of last round (11 sts)
rnd 5: In FLO, sl st around making sure your tension isn’t too tight (11 sts)
Fasten off and leave a long tail (about 18 inches) for attaching.
MAKE POMPOM AND ASSEMBLE AND ATTACH HAT
Make a tiny yarn pompom with the shell color yarn. To make a pompom, wrap the yarn around your index finger and tie the center with a piece of nylon thread (any color). Then cut the loops and shape the pompom with scissors. It can be challenging to make a pompom this tiny – I made this video tutorial on how to make your tiny pompom.
Using the beginning yarn tail of the hat, thread through the center of the pompom so that the yarn is going through the knotted thread securing your pompom. Bring the yarn tail back through the top of the hat and knot it on the inside of the hat. Weave the tail in so it’s secure. Use remaining tail to stuff the hat. Use the ending tail of the hat and tapestry needle to attach to snail’s head. This video shows a good method for attaching amigurumi pieces.

ATTACHING THE BODY TO SHELL
We will be attaching the shell with a row of running stitches, going through a st on the shell and then through a st on the body. Keep track of where the center of the shell and body are so you attach in a straight line.

ATTACHING THE HAT
Using the long tail of yarn, attach the hat to the snail’s head. This video shows a good technique for attaching amigurumi pieces.
EMBROIDERING THE FACE

For tips on how to embroider eyes and mouth on amigurumi, click here for the in-depth tutorial.
You can embroider the face while crocheting the body (after rnd 6) or when you have finished and assembled your snail. Embroidering the face before you’ve closed your piece allows you to knot your thread on the inside, making it easier to hide and secure. However, it can be more challenging to get the position right because the shape of the snail may change after you stuff it. You can also use 3 or 4mm black beads for the eyes. If using beads, skip steps 1-4, sew them on 3 sts apart, and then continue with step 5.
Thread your embroidery needle with black embroidery thread (about 24 inches) and knot the end. Insert your needle through the back of the snail’s head BETWEEN stitches and bring it through the front of the snail’s head THROUGH a stitch towards the bottom of rnd 3. Pull the beginning thread knot into the snail’s head from the back, so it is hidden and secure.

You’ve made me see snails in a whole new way ???
These are ADORABLE!! What yarn are you using for your multi variegated colors for shells/hat/pompom? That is a GREAT addition!
The one with the teal, coral, green, and yellow is I Love This Cotton, I don’t think the colorway is available any more. The pink, orange, and yellow yarn is Lily Sugar N Cream yarn, which I would’t recommend as it is a very rough cotton yarn. But it is cute!
My child desperately wanted a snail toy and this was the cutest pattern out there! I made it last night and it was really fun and easy to make. My child loves it!
these are so adorable!! thank you for the pattern!
So glad you liked it!
Can you make a fancy snail with a top hat? My friend was drawing some adorable snails and they looked almost exactly like this.
the sewing is very hard but the pattern was great.
How cute! What yarns are you using for the variegated shells? I am not liking what I’ve found to use…& i LOVE the ones like you have done!
My daughter asked for me to
Make these for birthday gifts for her class of elementary children in alternate learning school.
