Working from home gets lonely, y’all — even for an introverted gal who can have in-depth conversations with her cats. Some days it feels like I barely leave a 10 foot radius, switching back and forth between my computer chair and my crocheting chair. So to fight the doldrums I keep podcasts or music on for most of the day! I thought I’d share some of my favorite podcasts with you in case you’re in need of some crafter-tainment.
IF YOU WANT TO BINGE LISTEN
S-Town – Try Chapter 1
From the creators of Serial (if you haven’t listened to Season 1, you must!) and This American Life, this story is all kinds of weird. It takes place in Woodstock, Alabama or “Shit Town” as John B. McLemore lovingly refers to it. John emailed This American Life for years asking them to investigate a murder in his small Alabama town, claiming there was a cover up. This is only the beginning of a winding tale about relationships and the meaning of life.
IF YOU LIKE INTERVIEWS WITH FASCINATING PEOPLE
How to Be Amazing with Michael Ian Black – Try Episode 38 “Tim Gunn”
Michael Ian Black’s sharp intellect and dry humor make him the perfect interviewer. From YouTube personalities to astrophysicists, Black dives deep with his guests and gets surprisingly candid answers and advice.
IF YOU WANT TO IMPROVE YOURSELF
Magic Lessons – Try Episode 201 “You Have a Screaming Not a Calling”
Elizabeth Gilbert’s Magic Lessons podcast is the perfect companion to her book Big Magic (a must read for all who are creatively inclined). Each episode, she helps aspiring creatives overcome their fears and achieve their goals. After working through their problem with them, she consults an expert in the artist’s field for even more advice – for an aspiring comedian, she will consult a professional comedian. I can’t recommend this podcast enough.
Dear Sugar – Try Episode 89 “Baby or Bust”
Based on the cult-favorite advice column, the original Sugars, Cheryl Strayed and Steve Almond, answer listener questions — no matter how deep or dark — with insight and thoughtfulness.
IF YOU WANT TO FEEL ALL THE FEELS
Modern Love – Try Episode 30 “To Fall in Love with Anyone, Do This”
From the popular New York Times column of the same name, the Modern Love podcast brings the column to life with readings by notable personalities and updates from the essay writer. The stories range from heartbreaking to uplifting, but each one lingers for a while after you’ve heard it.
IF YOU WANT TO LEARN SOMETHING
Freakonomics Radio – Try Episode 245 “How to Get More Grit in Your Life”
In his weekly podcast, Stephen Dubner of the best-selling Freakonomics books explores the hidden side of everything from the importance of handwriting to banning tipping in restaurants.
Invisibilia – Try Episode “The Personality Myth”
Invisibilia is all about the invisible forces behind human behaviors like ideas, beliefs and assumptions. I love psychology and this podcast always makes me think!
