MATERIALS (recommendations in parantheses)

FINISHED SIZE & GAUGE

Gauge isn’t important for this pattern. Just make sure your stitches are tight to avoid stuffing show through. My finished Rainbow Cloud amigurumi measures 6 inches tall and 4 1/2 inches wide.

CROCHET STITCHES & ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMINOLOGY)

ch – chain
inc – single crochet increase
inv dec – invisible decrease
rnd(s) – round(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
standing sc – standing single crochet
x – times (indicates number of times to repeat)
[ ] – repeat steps between brackets for the specified number of times
( ) – the number of stitches you should have at the end of each round

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES

Invisible Decrease Find tutorial here.
• Finish offWatch tutorial here.
Standing sc – Make a slipknot on your hook, insert hook into specified stitch and make a single crochet as normal.

NOTES

  • All sections are worked in a continuous round unless otherwise noted.
  • Mark the beginning of each round with a stitch marker. This is extra important in this pattern to achieve the cloud’s shape.
  • Make pieces in the order presented.
  • Demonstration photos are shown right-handed.
  • Not all yarns are created equal! Yarns listed as the same weight frequently differ in size and stretch. Ricorumi DK is on the thinner end of light weight yarns.
  • For instructions like “inc 3”, this means increase (2 sc in the same st) for the next 3 stitches.
  • Your finished cloud won’t be able to stand on its own. It will need to be propped up against something to stand up.

EMBROIDERING THE FACE
Use an embroidery needle and 6 strands of embroidery floss double knotted at the end. You can use safety eyes if you’d prefer not to embroider them and then just embroider a simple mouth. The most important thing to remember when embroidering on crochet is to insert your needle and thread THROUGH a stitch and not BETWEEN stitches. Inserting your needle into the yarn helps secure the thread and makes the line straighter.

ATTACHING THE LEGS
The legs will be attached to two rows of stitches at the base of the cloud amigurumi. I’ve positioned the legs at the center of each bottom bump and slightly forward towards the face. You can also use a sewing pin to determine the center and place your legs equidistant from the pin. The red dots in the image below show where I placed the legs.
